To find the depth of a footing, you need to calculate the bearing capacity of the soil in which the footing will be placed. This can be done by performing a soil test or analyses, such as a conventional plate load test, or using a finite element analysis with soil properties.
Once the bearing capacity is determined, the depth of the footing is calculated based on the size of the footing, the soil type and compaction, any water table, and the live and dead loads that will be applied to it.
