1. Clear the area where the culvert retaining wall will be built. Remove any trees, stones or other debris.
2. Calculate the length and width of the wall based on the size of the culvert and the area you plan to build the wall.
3. Dig a trench along the proposed wall’s outline that is at least 1 foot deeper than the desired height of the wall. The trench should also be wider, by an additional 6-8 inches, than the proposed width of the wall.
4. Line the bottom of the trench with gravel or crushed stone.
5. Place and level the first row of culvert sections and use a level to make sure they are level. If needed, use a tamping tool to press the sections into the ground.
6. Fill the gaps between the sections with sand and tamp down.
7. Place the remaining rows in the same way, making sure the sections are level and the sides are straight.
8. Fill in the remaining space around the culvert sections with concrete and tamp it down.
9. Allow the concrete to dry overnight, then cap the top with either soil or additional concrete as desired.
