3. Dig a trench that is 6-8 inches wide, 8-12 inches deep, and the length of the wall.
4. Place layers of gravel in the trench to provide a good foundation for the retaining wall.
5. Pour a concrete footing to help support the wall.
6. Install steel reinforcement rods (rebar) into the concrete as per directions, leaving it exposed so it will extend out of the concrete and into the blocks.
7. Place the first layer of blocks in the trench, making sure they are even with the top of the trench. Tap each block gently with a rubber mallet to ensure they are level and secure.
8. Fill in the spaces between the blocks with tamped soil or gravel.
9. Install drainage pipe behind the wall to allow water to escape.
10. Back fill the area behind the wall with soil and tamp firmly.
11. Install a cap at the top of the wall to protect it from the elements.
