A well-designed irrigation system should run long enough to evenly distribute the water needed to reach the desired moisture level in the soil, without running so long that water runoff occurs.
Generally, a good rule of thumb to follow is to allow the irrigation system to run for 15 minutes every other day in normal weather conditions.
