The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake, with an epicenter near the town of Léogâne and approximately 25 kilometers (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital.
It caused major damage in Port-au-Prince, Jacmel and other settlements in the region. Its magnitude was estimated to be between 7.0 and 7.3 on the Moment magnitude scale, with reports of 7.8 being later discredited. It had a reported intensity of VII (Very strong) on the Mercalli intensity scale.
