A freshly felled tree contains a large amount of sap and moisture about 50% by weight. If the timber obtained from the freshly cut tree is directly used in structural works like carpentry, then the timber is liable to shrink, expand or crack by showing gaps st joints. Therefore, the timber must be free from moisture or water before using in any engineering works. Also, the sap in green timber should be removed.

      Methods of seasoning of Timber

The method of seasoning may broadly be classified in the following categories.

      1. Natural Seasoning (Air Seasoning)

Timber seasoning can be broadly categorized into natural seasoning and artificial seasoning. Natural seasoning involves air-drying timber in open spaces or under sheds, allowing moisture to evaporate gradually. Artificial seasoning uses controlled methods like kiln drying, chemical seasoning, or electrical seasoning for faster and more uniform moisture removal. Both methods enhance timber’s durability and usability.
