Define traffic engineering

Traffic Engineering: Traffic Engineering is that branch of engineering which deals with the development in traffic performance of road networks and terminals. This is achieved by systematic traffic studies , engineering applications and scientific analysis

The basic object of traffic engineering is to achieve efficient, free and rapid flow on traffic with least number of traffic accidents.

The study of traffic engineering may be decided into 6 major sections ;

i. Traffic Characteristics

ii. Traffic studies and analysis

iii. Traffic operation – control and regulations

iv. Planning and analysis

v. Geometric design by

vi. Administration and management

The various phases of traffic engineering are implemented with the help of Engineering, Enforcement and Education or 3 – Es.
