      Long column

      Short column
      If the slenderness ratio i.e. effective length to the least lateral dimension of the column is greater than 12, then it is termed as long column. If the slenderness ratio i.e. effective length to the least lateral dimension of the column is less than or equal to 12, then it is termed as short column.
      Lef/b >12 Lef/b </= 12
      Long columns are weaker than the short columns, therefore are less preferred.  Short columns are stronger than long columns, and therefore highly preferable.
      Fails by buckling. Fails by crushing.
      Load carrying capacity is less. Load carrying capacity is more.
      Less radius of gyration. More radius of gyration.
      Buckle easily. The buckling tendency is low.
