Scientists monitor earthquakes using seismic instruments and seismic networks. Seismic instruments such as seismometers, accelerometers, and geophones detect the ground movement caused by an earthquake and send the signal to a seismic network which records the data and makes it available for analysis.
The information collected by these networks is used to calculate the size and location of an earthquake, as well as provide additional information about its source.
