1. Gather the supplies you need, including bricks, mortar, a trowel, a spirit level, and a shovel.
2. Start by digging a trench around the area to be walled in. Make sure that the trench is at least 8 inches deep, and use the spirit level to check that the sides are even.
3. Prepare the footing for the wall by pouring at least 4 inches of concrete into the trench. Smooth the cement, and use the spirit level to make sure it is level. Let the concrete dry for at least 24 hours before proceeding.
4. Begin laying bricks by applying a bed of mortar to the back of each brick as you go. Set each brick in the mortar, making sure that they are evenly spaced. Check with the spirit level regularly to make sure the wall is level.
5. Now, cut a line of mortar between the bricks with your trowel. Make sure it is deep enough.
6. Keep going until you reach the desired height for the wall. Tap each brick gently with a rubber mallet to make sure it is securely set.
7. Finally, use the trowel and spirit level to give the wall a finished look.
Congratulations! You have successfully built a brick retaining wall.
