1. Begin by planning the shape and location of your limestone retaining wall. Consider the purpose of the wall, the size, and the type of drainage you will need.
2. Calculate the amount of material needed for your wall by determining the length, width, and height of the wall and the size of the limestone blocks.
3. Dig a trench along the length of the wall approximately 12-18 inches deep, ensuring that the backside is sloped slightly away from the house to ensure proper drainage.
4. Place stones or blocks into the trench and level them. Secure each block with concrete or mortar as needed.
5. Fill any gaps between the blocks with smaller stones or pieces of mortar to prevent soil from entering the cracks.
6. Use a tamper or compactor to compact the soil behind the wall before filling it in with soil or gravel.
7. Add topsoil up to the top of the wall and tamp it lightly.
8. Backfill around the base of the wall and tamp it until it is level and even with the rest of the yard.
9. Finish by covering the wall with landscaping fabric and placing decorative rocks or accent plants on top.
