Bridge abutment caps are best calculated using a combination of engineering principles, experience, and computer models. Engineers use finite element analysis and structural analysis to calculate the effects of soil pressure, water pressure and other forces on the bridge abutment.
These forces are then used to determine the necessary cap level in order to support the bridge. Additionally, predictive computer models may be used to assess the potential load bearing capacity of the structure and the risk of failure.
