1. Determine the space available for the staircase. Take into account the room dimensions, door openings, and any obstacles that would need to be avoided in order to install the staircase.
2. Measure the rise and run of the stairs. Ensure that the rise is comfortably tall enough for people to safely climb.
3. Purchase the staircase materials. Consider purchasing premade staircases that are designed to fit the given space, or purchase individual components such as risers, treads, and railings.
4. Assemble the staircase frame. Cut the frame pieces, if necessary, in order to fit the space. Secure the frame to the floor and walls with appropriate construction methods.
5. Install the treads and risers. Place the treads on top of the frame and secure them with screws. If wider steps are desired, securely attach a riser board between each tread.
6. Install the handrails. Secure the handrails to the frame using appropriate mounting hardware. The handrails should be securely attached and should be capable of supporting weight.
7. Finish off the staircase. Apply finishes or coatings according to preference. Add decorative elements such as carpeting or paint, if desired.
