The staircase effect is an optical illusion in which a set of steeply sloping steps appears to be connected by a series of even steps. This can occur when viewing a photograph or a graphic representation of a staircase, as well as in real life.
It is caused by the human brain interpreting the continuous line of steps as a set of discrete steps.
