Replacing a door closer is relatively easy and only takes a few simple steps.
1. Remove the old door closer. Unscrew or otherwise release the mounting screws that secure the old door closer to the door frame or wall. Take care to keep track of any small parts or pieces that come off with the door closer.
2. Prepare the new door closer. Attach the mounting brackets to the door closer, making sure to place them in the same locations as the old door closer.
3. Attach the new door closer. Place the new door closer in the same spot as the old door closer and secure it with the mounting screws. Make sure the door closer is securely fastened to the door frame or wall.
4. Adjust the tension. Turn the tension knob on the new door closer to adjust the amount of force used to close the door. Start by setting it at the middle level, then test to see if it requires more or less tension depending on how heavy the door is and how quickly it closes.
5. Test the door closer. Open and close the door several times to make sure the closer is functioning properly. If necessary, adjust the tension knob again until the door operates smoothly.
