A water dam works by utilizing the large force of moving water (water pressure) to create a barrier, which slows or stops the flow of water. This obstruction creates a reservoir behind the dam where excess water can be collected and stored.
The stored water can then be used for irrigation, hydropower, recreation, or other needs. A dam may also have flood gates or other measures installed to help manage the flow of water in and out of the reservoir.
