According to IS 2116 1980, the sand for masonry mortars should be hard, durable and free from dust, organic matter, silt and alkali. It should also be free from clay, loam or any other admixtures.
The sand should be of such fineness and shape to give a workable and tough mortar and should have a crushing strength of not less than 35 N/mm2.
