The Indian Standard Code of Soil Classification (IS: 1498-1970) is the official classification system for classifying soils in India. It groups soils into nine major soil groups, namely Alluvial, Black, Desert, Laterite, Mountain, Peaty, Red, Saline and Shallow soils.
