Abutment in bridge engineering is the element of bridge construction that transitions the superstructure to the substructure.
It acts as a connection between the bridge deck and the supports and transfers the loads from the deck to the supports. Abutments may also be used for protecting the end of a bridge from damage due to scouring, weathering, and other environmental factors.
