Diaphragm walls are reinforced concrete walls constructed in deep excavations for retaining soils, similar to sheet piling. They are generally used as permanent retaining walls or foundations and are constructed by excavating slopes from the top down. They consist of a steel and concrete structure which acts as a vertical load-bearing wall.
