Aggregate is gap graded when intermediate size is essentially not present from the gradation curve. Usually gap graded mixes contain aggregate retained on a 19 mm sieve, and particles passing the sieve No. 4. Gap-graded mix is used to obtain uniform textures for exposed aggregate in concrete and can also increase strength and reduce creep and shrinkage in concrete. Though the intermediate sizes generally can be omitted without making the mix to segregation, choose the fine aggregate percentage with care for gap-graded concrete, Use about 0.25 of its volume with rounded aggregate and 0.35 with crushed material.
