Punching shear is a type of shear failure that occurs around openings or column footings in reinforced concrete slabs. It happens when there is a very large concentrated load applied to the top of the slab, causing it to crack and eventually fail. Punching shear usually occurs at column footings, due to the large concentrated loads they receive.
To prevent this type of failure, the footing must be designed with sufficient reinforcement bars to transfer the forces adequately.
