When an earthquake occurs, the best way to remain safe is to immediately drop to the ground, take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture or doorway, and hold on until the shaking stops.
People should remain in that position until they are certain that the earthquake has ended, even if they feel additional shaking. After the shaking has stopped, evacuate the building or area in case of aftershocks, or electric and gas lines that may have been damaged.
