After an earthquake, disease can spread due to a number of factors. These include inadequate access to sanitation, clean water and medical care; structural damage to hospitals and health care facilities; disrupted transportation links that hinder the delivery of aid; polluted air and water; overcrowding in shelters; and insect infestations. Additionally, people can be injured in the quake, which can lead to increased levels of infection.
