The key reason for choosing 150mm as the standard size is because for concrete testing, whether it’s a Cube, Beam, or Cylinder, the dimensions chosen must be the minimum dimension that will exhibit the same strength as any other dimension on site. As a result of study into different sizes and forms, it was established that 150mm is the best minimum dimension that may be related to real site strength.
Other reasons are casting and curing smaller dimension cubes is easier and less loading capacity testing equipment is required leading to cost saving.
