Sludge from a wastewater treatment plant is usually treated using a combination of aerobic or anaerobic digestion and dewatering processes. In the aerobic digestion process, organic material in the sludge is broken down by microorganisms and converted into carbon dioxide, water and other simple compounds.
The anaerobic digestive process further breaks down the sludge into methane, carbon dioxide and other simpler compounds. The remaining solids are then separated and dewatered to reduce its moisture content and form a more solid and manageable material.
