The height of a building can be measured using theodolite by setting up the theodolite at ground level and sighting it across the top of the building. You will need to determine the vertical angle that the theodolite is viewing from the ground level, following which, the height of the building can be calculated using trigonometry. First, you will need to select two points on the ground and measure the horizontal distance between the two points.
Then, set up the theodolite at one of the points, aiming it towards the other point, and measure the vertical angle. Once both the horizontal distance and the vertical angle have been calculated, use the trigonometric formula, h = d x tan(a), to calculate the building’s height (h), where d is the horizontal distance and a is the vertical angle.
