In this method, the wall along the length of room is considered to be longwall while the wall perpendicular to long wall is said to be short wall. This method is also called as separate or individual wall method. This is simple and it gives accurate values.

      The following procedure is adopted:

      1. The dimensions of long wall and short wall should be taken separately.
      2. In this method the longer walls are measured from out to out and the shorter or partition walls are considered as short walls and are measured from in to in so first measure the centre to centre distance of all the walls.
      3. For long walls add to the centre to centre length one breadth of wall, which gives the length of the walls out to out, multiply this length by the breadth and the height to get the quantities.

Thus, for finding the quantities of earthwork in excavation, for the length of trench add to the centre to centre length of foundation one breadth of foundation. It is to be noted that each footing is to be taken separately and the breadth of the particular footing is to be added to the centre length.

For short or cross walls subtract from the centre length one breadth of the wall which gives length in-to-in and repeat the same process as for long walls to find out the quantities.

      Therefore,

Long wall length = (centre to centre length + one breadth/width), where, the width is the respective width of the item in consideration.

Short Wall Length = (centre to centre length of the short wall – one breadth/width), where the width is the respective width of the item such as earthwork, c.c. bed etc.
