Dams can help control floods by impounding the excess water that would otherwise have flooded downstream areas. The dam reservoir acts as a temporary storage for the runoff, thereby reducing the peak flows of the river.
During times of high water levels, dams can also be used to release large quantities of water from upstream reservoirs in order to reduce flooding downstream. Moreover, dams also provide local benefits such as providing water for irrigation and public water supply.
