Earthquakes occur when two tectonic plates rub against each other, causing a sudden release of energy in the form of seismic waves. This energy is released in a variety of ways, such as small tremors, larger seismic waves, and even massive landslides or tsunamis.

Earthquakes can be caused by natural events such as volcanic activity, but can also be triggered by human activities such as mining, nuclear testing, and dam building.
