A gravity dam is a type of large dam that relies on its weight and the force of gravity to hold back water. It is typically made from concrete or stone masonry and constructed across a river to form a reservoir that can store a large amount of water.
The dam must be heavy enough to resist the force of the water pushing against it, as well as the force of the water coursing down the river. A series of buttresses anchor the dam securely in place and help it bear the force of the water. The base of the dam is wider than the top, which allows it to maintain its structural stability. The structure must be built so that its center of gravity is lower than the water pressure.
