The epicenter of an earthquake is the point on the Earth’s surface that is directly above where the seismic waves originated from. It can be determined by locating at least three seismograph stations to measure the time it takes for the shock wave to reach each station. The three points are then used to create a circle known as an “isoseismal map” with the epicenter located at the center.
