How to make squint bricks?

Squints, or “soldier” bricks, are simple rectangular blocks of brick and mortar used in brickwork or masonry construction. To make squints, start by mixing mortar to a consistency of thick cream.

Then, use a trowel to spread the mortar onto a flat surface. Place the brick onto the mortar and press it down slightly to bond it to the surface. Finally, use a pointing tool to press the mortar into the joints between the bricks and clean up any excess mortar.
