To measure the length with a theodolite, first set up the theodolite on a flat, level surface and make sure it is securely clamped in place. Then point the telescope towards one end of the measured length and take a reading with the vertical and horizontal angles. Move the telescope to the other end of the length and take a reading again.
Calculate the difference between the two readings and convert to a linear distance using trigonometry. Finally, add or subtract any corrections that may be required due to refraction or atmospheric conditions.
