To remove the z-axis in AutoCAD, you need to access the "Display" settings. Click on the "View" tab and then select the "Display" option in the dropdown menu. Select the "2D Wireframe" setting and this will turn off the third dimension (z axis). This should allow you to work only in two dimensions.
