To use a theodolite to measure distance, you will need to set up the instrument and adjust it for precision. First, make sure that the tripod is stable on the ground and level with the surface. Next, level the instrument using the Spirit Level. Once the theodolite is level, set the line of sight on the target, usually a marked point or known location.
Make sure the theodolite is pointing the right direction to the target by adjusting the vertical and horizontal axes. Finally, measure the distance to the target by reading the values off the scale. Repeat the process at least three times to ensure accuracy.
