1. Begin by measuring the desired length and height of your retaining wall, then cut the railway sleepers to size if needed.
2. Dig a trench that is the same depth as the sleepers and slightly wider. Make sure it’s level and all in the same line.
3. Place the railway sleepers into the trench, fit them together and make sure they are level.
4. Pack soil or sand around the sides of the sleepers to hold them in place. Compress the soil around the sleepers by tamping it down with a tool such as a weed tamper.
5. To build a higher wall, add more layers of sleepers on top of the first. Make sure each layer is lined up properly with the layer beneath.
6. Backfill the space behind the wall with soil. For extra stability, use a geotextile membrane to create a barrier between the soil and the wall.
7. Fill in any gaps between sleepers with soil or gravel.
8. Finally, cover the wall with landscape fabric to protect it from weathering and reduce erosion.
