Theodolite surveying instruments are used to measure horizontal and vertical angles in order to calculate the relative position of a point. To use a theodolite, the user must begin by setting up the instrument over the reference point, or known point, whose position is already known within the surveying environment. The user will then level the instrument and sight it on the point that is to be located.
