Name of the materials and their sizes are as follows:
- Bricks – bricks are used to construct the large size of sewers and it plastered from the outside to prevent outer components from coming. In the brick sewer, cement-concrete or stone are used. And 12.5 mm thick plaster is done.
- Vitrified clays or stoneware pipes: pipes are made from vitrified clay or stoneware which can bare 1.5 kg/cm2 and internal pressure and a superimposed load of 7500kg/m. pipes are made of sizes up to 600mm in dia and length may vary from 60 to 90 cm.
- Cement concrete pipes: it is mostly used nowadays and maybe it is precast or cast in situ. Precast pipes are made using steel reinforcement and are known as hume pipes. They are 10 to 250 cm in dia and 1 to 3m in length.
- Cast iron pipes: cast iron pipes have more resistant to internal pressure and external load, so they are used in sewers. When sewers are laid under bent bridges or on piers, cast iron is used for their construction. Also under railway lines etc., cast iron sewers are used.
- Steel pipe: steel pipe can bare more impact load, vibration, and internal pressure than cast iron. It is used for underwater river crossing, railway crossing, at the pumping station, etc. these pipes are used for sewer. These pipes withstand with hammering pressure of water and are very ductile, but it has the disadvantage that they cannot bear the higher external load. Pipes are used above 750mm dia.
- Plastic pipes: these are not so common in use but where the corrosion problem arrived like in industrial sewer then this option is adopted. Its main advantage is that it is resistant to corrosion and has good flow consistency.
