- Lack of lateral confinement: If lateral confinement is not provided for granular sub-base or base courses, the materials will spread out owing to traffic.
- Loss of binding action: Internal aggregate movements in subbase or base courses are caused by repeated stress applications, causing the composite mass or structure of the layers to be disturbed.
