      • Inadequate strength: Sub-base or base course instability or strength can be caused by poor mix proportioning or insufficient pavement thickness.
      • Inadequate wearing course: The sub-base and base courses are subject to the destructive effects of climatic agencies and traffic if the wearing course is insufficiently thick or altogether absent.
      • Lack of lateral confinement: If lateral confinement is not provided for granular sub-base or base courses, the materials will spread out owing to traffic.
      • Loss of binding action: Internal aggregate movements in subbase or base courses are caused by repeated stress applications, causing the composite mass or structure of the layers to be disturbed. As a result, the pavement layer loses its binding capacity, resulting in poor stability and load transmission capabilities.
      • Material loss: Base course materials may be lost owing to traffic activity if the base course is not covered by a wearing course or if the wearing course is completely worn out, resulting in the formation of potholes on the surface. Substandard materials: When the materials used to construct flexible pavements do not match the requisite criteria, the structural performance of the pavement degrades.
