The 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami were caused by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of Honshu, Japan. The earthquake triggered a powerful tsunami that caused widespread destruction along the Pacific coast of Japan.
The cause of the earthquake was due to a combination of three components: a subduction zone in which the oceanic Pacific plate was forced beneath the continental Okhotsk plate, a build up of stress in the area due to the movement of the two plates, and a sudden slip of the fault line.
