The Mullaperiyar Dam is a 122-year-old gravity masonry dam constructed in 1895 across the Periyar River in Kerala, India. The main issue was around the quota of water allocated to Tamil Nadu and Kerala. While Tamil Nadu requested for an increase in the water quota, Kerala expressed fears that the aging dam might not be able to withstand the flow of additional water and could collapse, leading to floods in downstream areas.
So far, the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Tamil Nadu, maintaining the right of Tamil Nadu to draw water according to the allotment set in 2006.
