A spillway is a structure built into a dam to allow water to pass safely over or around it. A typical dam spillway is designed to help manage the flow of water when the volume of water stored in the reservoir rises above normal levels, and it is intended to reduce the risk of flooding downstream.
Generally, spillways are located at the lowest point of the dam and are fitted with gates, valves, or outlets to regulate the amount and rate of water flowing downstream.
