The most widely used aluminium alloy series in marine construction are the 5XXX (Al-Mg), 6XXX (Al-Mg-Si) and 7XXX (Al-Zn-Mg) series. These alloys offer good corrosion resistance and high strength to weight ratios, making them ideal for shipbuilding applications. In addition, alloy 5083 and 6061 have also been used in various applications such as deck plating, bulkheads, and hatch covers.
