Earth’s tectonic plates serve as boundaries which can produce earthquakes. Earthquakes occur when two tectonic plates grind against each other, and eventually one plate is forced underneath the other, resulting in a release of energy in the form of seismic waves.
Other boundaries that can produce earthquakes include convergent boundaries (where two plates are pushed together), divergent boundaries (where two plates are pulled apart), and transform boundaries (where two plates slide horizontally past each other).
