Select different semi-finished materials for different engraving designs

As a novice or handmade wood enthusiast, it is recommended to directly buy semi-finished materials with clear goals, such as brand materials, ring materials, spoon materials, comb materials, slingshot materials, and so on. The reasons are twofold. First, buying large volumes of wood naturally requires the right machine to cut the material. This requires professional equipment and professionals, and manual cutting is very time-consuming and laborious; Secondly, manual production focuses on carving and polishing, and other aspects do not require too much energy and patience, otherwise it is easy to produce frustration.

The pursuit of manual DIY is the fun of the process, but also making unique things, does not mean that all work is better done manually. I believe that machines can do some basic, repetitive work, then these tasks should be handed over to machines. We, as sculptors, are committed to the process of carving in a way that reveals the uniqueness and individuality of the work. For example, I used to focus on ring and comb shape design with the help of a pneumatic engraver, rather than on ring rough cutting and comb rough cutting.

Branding material

This refers to the cuboid material in the size of 60mm*40mm*10mm, which is used to make wooden nameplates. The wooden sign plate has the function of marking. They represent their function mainly through visual expression, for example, the communication of words. Of course, we can carve our favorite patterns or symbolic, directional, or suggestive letters on the sign. These carved letters can express the character, background, and realistic symbolism of the sculptor.

In addition, I often use brand materials to process into small objects such as pendants. You know what? They are the materials I use the most. You can also try it yourself and make unique accessories based on your own preferences.

Ring material

They are generally 30mm*30mm*10mm size blocks. Of course, some will directly drill a round hole in the center of the material, with a diameter of 16~18mm. You can buy this ring material directly according to your needs, and you just need to polish it. This can greatly reduce your sculpting time. But if you want to play on your own and like to design something unique, then I recommend buying cube materials.

The semi-finished material with the middle hole saves the two processes of hand drilling and line sawing, which will still save a lot of time, and the quality is also good. You can also buy better quality semi-finished materials, such as ring material with a hole in the middle, or even ring material. All you have to do is polish!

Spoon material, comb material, bookmark material, slingshot material, etc., are semi-finished wood made according to what needs to be done. As a novice, there are many things you can try to carve, mainly pendants, rings, bracelets, plaques, spoons, plates, bookmarks, combs, small ornaments, small animals, and so on.
