CPVC pipe full form
The full form of CPVC pipe is Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride pipe.
What is a CPVC pipe?
CPVC pipes stand for Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride pipes. This pipe has usually strong & reliable and is generally used for plumbing purposes. And the reason behind using this pipe for plumbing is its durability and capability. It can withstand high temperature and high pressure which makes it very useful for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes. It is even used for the fire sprinkler system. It was originally developed by Lubrizol Advanced Materials.
Its durability can be known from the fact that if this pipe is installed for hot and cold water transportation then it can withstand and work properly for 50 years. It had introduced in 1959 for plumbing purposes.
It is made up of PVC pipes by adding chlorine in the water slurry or by fluidized bed chlorination process. But as we know this reaction can’t occur easily, so this reaction of adding chlorine to PVC pipe is initiated by UV rays (Ultraviolet rays). And the main reason for doing this process of converting PVC pipes to CPVC pipes is to increase their resistance against heat and temperature. It also increases its capability to avoid corrosion and fire in the pipes.
What is PVC pipe?
PVC pipe stands for Polyvinyl chloride pipe. And it is the most commonly used pipe in our houses, commercial places, and industrial places. This pipe is in use for 80 years. It has strong, durable, and complete corrosion resistance with little risk of thermal explosion or contraction.
This pipe is economical and robust, so it is convenient for our uses. And it is available on various fittings. So it can use for both hot and cold water as per the PVC variants. Generally, PVC pipes are used for manufacturing savage pipes, water mains, and irrigation. As it has robust so it is very easy to install. And one more reason for its common use is that it is lightweight, convenient to use, and easily recyclable. This pipe has a smooth surface that provides a frictionless path for the flow of water.

It can be manufactured as per the need like the thickness of the wall, the diameter of the pipe, and many more. So from all these features which we get while using PVC pipe make user convenient. And that’s the reason behind it’s widely spreading.
What is PE piping?
The full form of PE pipe is Polyethylene pipe. And the method of using or installation of PE pipes are called PE piping. PE pipes offer durability and flexibility while using them for the water, natural gas supply, etc. It offers resistance to corrosion in this pipe on the ground and due to its flexibility, it offers to withstand capability to the pipe for a longer time.
PE pipe comes with fusion or butt welded which reduces the risk of leakage in any case. Normally it is available in coil shape or long length. And because of these shapes, it has become the first choice for trenchless and pipe bursting applications.
PE pipes use for various purposes like water supply, pressurized natural gas, pipelines carrying petroleum products, portable water mains, and service lines, for geothermal heating and cooling using underground loops. For using it as a highway drainage pipe and storm sewers there needs some modifications in it. That’s corrugated PE pipes which use for these applications.
The material used for making PE pipe is Polyethylene, a thermoplastic material produces from the polymerization of ethylene. Normally PE pipe doesn’t use for water supply. There is another type of PE pipe whose name is HDPE pipe which is commonly used for water supply. HDPE pipe means High-Density Polyethylene pipe.
Why CPVC pipe is ideal for residential plumbing systems?
As above discussed CPVC pipe is made by chlorination of PVC pipe which makes it more flexible and durable than other pipes. They can be used for highly pressurized water which makes this pipe ideal for residential plumbing.
There are various factors due to which it is ideal for the residential plumbing systems and those factors are listed below:
1. Corrosion-resistant
CPVC pipe is a corrosion-resistant pipe which makes this pipe ideal for residential plumbing. And due prevention from corrosion it becomes free from all the toxicity that occurs due to corrosion. And if there is no corrosion in the pipe so it can withstand for a longer period.
2. Leakproof
As CPVC pipe and fittings use together with the solvent, which makes it free from any leakage. After installing this pipe there is no risk of any leakage in this pipe because of its strength and durability. It can cause a high initial cost but it will be long-lasting.
3. Fire resistant
CPVC pipe is fire resistant as it does not support combustion. In case of fire occur near the pipe then it may be catch fire till the source is present there as the source removed the fire will stop because this pipe doesn’t support combustion.
4. Safe and clean water
One of the main reasons for using CPVC pipe for residential plumbing is that it doesn’t transfer any harmful chemical to the water while passing through it. And this makes the water free from any impurities and makes it safe for drinking.
5. Low maintenance
As CPVC pipe is free from corrosion and leakproof so it requires less maintenance. In CPVC only the initial cost is high rather than that no more maintenance is required.
6. Durability
As CPVC pipe is free from corrosion so it has become long-lasting. They are very flexible and easily bendable which makes this pipe more durable, in case this pipe bend from anywhere then there is no risk of damages to this pipe.
Due to all these factors in CPVC pipe, it becomes ideal for using residential plumbing. It offers many features which make it the user convenient to use for their residential plumbing.

Difference between CPVC pipe and PVC pipe
Both CPVC pipe and PVC pipe are somehow similar in some way. But there are some differences between both of them which are listed below.
Characteristics |
CPVC Pipe |
PVC Pipe |
Life | Life of CPVC Pipe is nearly about 50yrs depending upon the pipe quality and some of the external safety factors. | Whereas the life of PVC is totally dependent upon the raw material used for making this pipe and fillers used in this pipe. |
Material used | The material used for CPVC Pipe is lead-free material which is complete compounds and is portable water certified. | The material used for PVC pipes is PVC resin and some of the additives may be lead. |
Breaking changes | CPVC Pipe is flexible in nature which makes it completely bendable. And due to this, it has less chance of breakage. | PVC Pipe is brittle in nature because of fillers present in it which increases the chance of breakage only after a small bend. |
Temperature | CPVC Pipe can withstand up to 92⁰ C and due to which it becomes convenient for supplying both cold and hot water. | PVC Pipe can withstand only up to 50⁰C it means it can’t supply hot water. It is only for supplying cold water. |
Effect of pressure | CPVC Pipe has more strength to handle high pressure. | PVC Pipe doesn’t have the capability to withstand in high pressure, it started getting degraded after each point on increasing pressure. |
Effect on water | CPVC Pipe uses tin as a stabilizer which makes it portable for water consumption. | PVC pipes use lead as a stabilizer which makes it harmful for water consumption and also it is not NSF certified. |
Quality | The quality of CPVC Pipe is better than PVC Pipe as it requires less maintenance. | Quality of PVC Pipe is not good enough because more maintenance is required here. If maintenance doesn’t occur from time to time it may start degrading. |
What is a CPVC pipe cutter?
CPVC pipe cutter is simply a machine which use to cut the pipe with a wheel cutter, hacksaw, or another fine tooth hand. It provides a simple and easy way to cut the pipe.
