The azimuth of a line is defined as the horizontal angle, measured with respect to the north direction (Meridian) in the clockwise direction and can be a value up to 360 degrees. It is also called as Whole Circle Bearing (WCB).

Conversion of Bearing to Azimuths: –

      N.E. Direction (1st Quadrant),

      • Azimuth = Bearing

      S.E. Direction (2nd Quadrant),

      • Azimuth = 180° – Bearing

      S.W. Direction (3rd Quadrant),

      • Azimuth =Bearing + 180°

      N.W. Direction (4th Quadrant),

      • Azimuth = 360° – Bearing

To calculate azimuth in surveying, first use a compass to measure the angle between two objects. Once the angle is determined, add the angle to the direction of the first object to determine the direction of the second object.

The resulting direction is the azimuth. It is important to take into account any magnetic declination when taking measures with a compass as this will affect the accuracy of your readings.
