D2/162 is the formula for calculating the unit weight of steel bars. Where D represents diameter of steel bars, and 162 is a constant value which is derive as shown below.
Derivation of this formula,
Assume the length of the bar = 1m
Unit weight of Steel = 7850 kg/m3
Weight of the steel bar (W) = Volume (V) * Unit weight of steel (Y)
W= V * Y
W= πD²/4 * L x Y
Substituting the values,
W= πD²/4 * 1 x 7850
As steel DÃa is in mm it has to be converted to Meter, D2/ 10002
W= π/4 * D2/ 10002 * 7850
W = D2Â / 162.28 Kg/m.
